Five Emerald Ridge High School senior boys signed their National Letters of Intent for National Signing Day Feb. 4 in the ER library. Seniors Brett Rankin, Jake March, Jason Schmidt, Mac Clarke and Wain Clarke signed with their respective colleges during the after school event.

National Signing Day is traditionally a day for high school seniors to sign a National Letter of Intent. The day is usually covered for college football, but sports such as hockey, soccer, track, cross country and water polo also sign Feb. 4. According to pennlive.com, the NCAA describes a letter of intent as a “binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and an NLI member institution.”

A National Letter of Intent requires that the student athlete agree to attend the institution full-time for at least an entire academic year.

Friends, family and staff members filled the school library just after 3 p.m. Feb. 4 to witness the ER athletes sign their letters and to congratulate them.

The athletes:

  • Brett Rankin – Football at South Dakota School of Mines
  • Jake March – Football at South Dakota School of Mines
  • Wain Clarke – Football at Hillsdale College
  • Mac Clarke – Soccer at San Diego State University
  • Jason Schmidt – Soccer at Humboldt State
